Bloating: Why bloating gets worse by evening.

5 sections, about 9 minutes in total

1 in 7

1 in 7 US adults experience bloating in a given week (CGH 2023 survey).

~2×

Bloating is reported about twice as often by women, and cycle hormones are part of why.

2 wks

Two weeks of a simple symptom diary usually reveals the pattern.

Section 1 of 5:

Start with the signs

The signs of bloating.

Bloating is a feeling of pressure or fullness in the belly. Sometimes the belly visibly swells too, which is called distension. Most bloating comes from gas, slow gut movement, constipation or how you eat, not from a damaged gut. Tap the signs you have to see why they happen.

Nothing you tap is stored. This is a mirror for you, not a form for us.

Section 2 of 5:

What the evidence says

What actually eases bloating.

Here are six popular fixes. Decide what you think of each one before the verdict shows. Most of them rate weak or worse.

Tap a promise from the label or the ad:

Pick a claim, make your call, then see what the trials actually found.

Verdicts summarize the cited research and will change if the research changes. This is coaching context, not a prescription, and it is never a substitute for the red-flag check below.

Section 3 of 5:

The mechanics

How bloating actually builds.

Follow one meal through the four steps. The last step explains why “it's just gas” advice keeps failing.

Tap a step to open it. Each one carries the detail.

The reflex part is trainable

Because the visible swelling is partly caused by nerves and a muscle reflex, things like eating more slowly, managing stress, improving posture and keeping regular meal times can genuinely help. This is also why cutting out whole food groups often does not fix bloating. The food was not the only cause.

Section 4 of 5:

Signs to take seriously

When bloating needs checking.

Most bloating is harmless and follows a daily pattern. But if you have any of the signs on the second list, get it checked soon.

Manageable through nutrition and lifestyle

  • Builds through the day, worst after meals or by evening, eases overnight
  • Tracks with specific foods, big or fast meals, stress or your cycle
  • Varies: good days and bad days, with a pattern you can map

See a doctor promptly

  • New, persistent bloating most days that doesn't ease overnight, especially over 50. It's usually benign, but it's a symptom doctors specifically want to hear about, including for ovarian health
  • Bloating with unintended weight loss, blood in the stool, vomiting, fever, or symptoms that wake you at night
  • Severe pain, or a belly that's tender rather than just full

Getting checked for these signs is a quick way to rule out serious causes. Work on your symptom patterns after the all-clear, not instead of it.

Section 5 of 5:

Now the part you control

Six habits that genuinely help.

These six have real evidence behind them. No detox teas, no forbidden-food lists. Toggle what you'd genuinely do.

Start with the diary. The other changes work better once you can see your own pattern.

The score is for illustration, not a clinical measure. If a food group keeps flagging in your diary, try a short structured elimination with planned reintroduction, ideally with a dietitian, instead of banning it forever. Celiac testing comes before any gluten-free trial.
