Acid Reflux / GERD: Reflux is a pressure problem.

5 sections, about 9 minutes in total

~20%

About 20 percent of US adults have GERD (NIDDK).

2×/wk

Heartburn twice a week or more is the usual threshold for GERD (NIDDK).

3 h

Leaving three hours between dinner and bed is the gap that helps night symptoms most.

Section 1 of 5:

Start with the signs

The signs of acid reflux and GERD.

Acid reflux is stomach acid moving up into the food pipe, called the esophagus. It happens when the valve at the top of the stomach opens when it should not. GERD is reflux that is frequent or damaging, usually twice a week or more. It is not always heartburn. Tap the signs you have to see why they happen.

Nothing you tap is stored. This is a mirror for you, not a form for us.

Section 2 of 5:

What the evidence says

What actually eases reflux.

Here are six things people try for reflux. Decide what you think of each one before the verdict shows. The simple habit changes score better than the well-known remedies.

Pick a claim, make your call, then see what the trials actually found.

Verdicts summarize the cited research and will change if the research changes. This is coaching context, not a prescription. Medication decisions are medical decisions.

Section 3 of 5:

The mechanics

How a reflux episode happens.

Click through the four steps, and notice which ones your daily habits can change.

Tap a step to open it. Each one carries the detail.

Why habits genuinely help

You can't change the valve itself, but meal size, meal timing, body position and your personal trigger list control how much pressure sits on it. That is why these habit changes are the first thing every guideline recommends.

Section 4 of 5:

Signs to take seriously

When reflux needs checking.

These two lists separate ordinary heartburn from the kind that needs an appointment.

Occasional heartburn

  • Shows up after big, late, rich or alcohol-heavy meals, then settles for days or weeks
  • Responds visibly to the habit changes below within a couple of weeks
  • Uncomfortable but common, and it usually improves with the habits below

See a doctor promptly

  • Heartburn twice a week or more, or reaching for antacids most days
  • Symptoms that wake you at night, or a years-long pattern you've never had assessed
  • Any medication question. Decisions about starting, stopping or staying on PPIs and H2 blockers belong entirely to your doctor

These signs need urgent care rather than tracking: chest pain that could be your heart (crushing, brought on by exertion, or with breathlessness gets treated as cardiac until proven otherwise), food sticking on the way down, unintended weight loss, vomiting blood, or black stools.

Section 5 of 5:

Now the part you control

Six habits that ease the pressure.

Every habit below works on meal size, meal timing or body position, which are the three things you can change day to day. Toggle what you'd genuinely do.

Your total score

Reflux levers pulled23%

Start with the 3-hour gap between dinner and bed. It is the single change that helps night symptoms most.

The score is for illustration, not a clinical measure. Blanket food bans (no coffee, no chocolate, no citrus, forever) usually go further than needed. The evidence supports finding your own triggers rather than avoiding every commonly listed food. Medication remains a medical decision throughout.
