Stress & Burnout: What burnout is, and how to recover from it.

6 sections, about 8 minutes in total

Load

Load is what causes burnout. It is more work than you can recover from, for months.

Recovery

Recovery is the part you control. That means sleep, breaks, movement and one boundary that holds.

Months

Burnout takes months to build, and about as long to recover from. There is no quick fix.

Section 1 of 6:

The three signs

The three signs of burnout.

The WHO defines burnout by three signs. Tap each one to see what it looks like in real life.

Tap a tab to open it. The detail lands here.

Two or three of these, lasting for weeks, is the pattern burnout takes. Where the line falls is a judgement call, not a diagnosis. The signs overlap with depression, which is a medical condition. If the exhaustion comes with hopelessness, feeling worthless, or losing interest in everything, not just work, read section 05 first.

Section 2 of 6:

What the evidence says

What helps with burnout, and what does not.

Burnout builds when you carry more than you can recover from, for months. Being tougher does not fix it. A holiday helps for a few weeks. What works is regular exercise and a real change to the load.

The beliefI just need to toughen up.
What the evidence saysThe WHO defines burnout by the load, not by toughness. Being told to be more resilient does nothing about the workload behind it.
The beliefA good holiday will fix it.
What the evidence saysTime off helps. The relief usually fades within a few weeks if the same load is waiting when you get back. A holiday is a good break, not a fix.
The beliefExercise helps me handle stress.
What the evidence saysTrue, and well studied. Regular exercise lowers how strongly you react to stress and lifts mood. It is one of the best recovery habits there is.
The beliefBurnout is just depression.
What the evidence saysThey overlap and can happen together, but they are not the same. Depression is low mood or loss of interest in nearly everything, most days, for two weeks or more. That is a professional's call.
The beliefIt will pass once this project ends.
What the evidence saysSometimes, if the load really drops. Often it does not. Burnout that has built up over months usually outlasts the project. Recovery takes a plan, not just a deadline passing.

These summaries reflect the cited research and will change if the research changes.

Section 3 of 6:

How the balance works

The problem is stress you do not recover from.

Click through the steps: what drains you, what restores you, and how a running deficit becomes burnout.

Tap a step to open it. Each one carries the detail.

Why this framing matters

“Be more resilient” puts the fix on you. The real fix is on both sides: cut the load where you can, and rebuild recovery as seriously as any workout. Both can change, and coaching works on both.

Section 4 of 6:

A quick self-check

Find where you are overloaded.

A self-check of your workload and recovery, for learning. It is not a burnout assessment or a mental health screening.

When to get help

Burnout, or something more?

Burnout and depression look similar from the inside. Here is how to tell them apart, because they need different help.

Looks like burnout

  • Tied to work or a specific load. You still feel more like yourself on weekends and holidays
  • Interest survives outside work. You still care about people, hobbies, and plans
  • Improves gradually when load drops and recovery rises, which is what the levers below work on

Bring in a professional

  • Low mood or lost interest in nearly everything, most days, for two weeks or more. That is the pattern of depression, and it is very treatable (NIMH)
  • Hopelessness, worthlessness, or any thoughts of self-harm. Talk to a professional now, or call or text 988. This is not a recovery-week project
  • Panic, dread, or anxiety that rules daily decisions. Therapy works on this. Willpower does not

If the right column sounds like your weeks, get proper support. The habits in the next section help alongside it.

Section 6 of 6:

The habits that help

Plan a week that restores you.

Recovery is the side of burnout you can train. Sleep and one boundary you keep make every other habit possible. Tap a habit to see what to do.
